How to Choose an Air Purifier for Indian Homes (Without Wasting Money)

A practical buyer’s framework for HEPA purifiers in Indian apartments and houses: CADR, room size, filters, noise, running cost, and what marketing claims to ignore.

Start with the problem you actually have

In most Indian cities, the winter and construction seasons are dominated by particulate matter—especially PM2.5. That means a true HEPA filter (or equivalent high-efficiency particle filtration) is the core requirement. Activated carbon helps with odours and some gases, but carbon alone will not solve a PM2.5 smog day. Ionisers and “vitamin” marketing features are secondary at best and can be counterproductive if they generate ozone.

Define rooms, not houses. One undersized unit in a hallway rarely cleans bedrooms where people sleep eight hours. Prioritise the clean room for children, elders, or anyone with asthma first, then expand.

CADR and room size: the non-negotiable math

Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR) describes how quickly a purifier delivers filtered air. As a practical rule of thumb, match CADR to room volume so you can achieve several air changes per hour. Manufacturers sometimes quote coverage for mild conditions; during Severe AQI weeks you want headroom, not bare minimum marketing claims.

Measure the room, note ceiling height, and be honest about open-plan layouts. If a living-dining area is one connected volume, size for the full volume. A door you never close does not create two rooms.

Filters, replacements, and true running cost

Purchase price is only the entry fee. HEPA and carbon filters are consumables. Check replacement intervals under heavy pollution—not only under lab-clean assumptions—and price a year of filters before you buy. A cheaper machine with expensive proprietary filters can cost more by the second winter.

Pre-filters catch hair and coarse dust and should be vacuumed or washed as designed. Neglecting pre-filters clogs HEPA media early and raises noise as fans work harder. Keep a calendar reminder; peak season is the wrong time to discover an empty spare-filter shelf.

Noise, sleep, and real-world placement

A purifier that is too loud will be switched off at night—the exact hours when many homes need it most. Check night-mode noise ratings and place the unit where airflow is not blocked by curtains or furniture. Keep it away from walls that choke intake, and avoid aiming exhaust directly at faces in bed if it creates drafts people hate.

Closed doors help. Running a powerful unit in a sealed bedroom usually beats running the same unit in a drafty open floor plan. Combine filtration with source control: reduce frying smoke, incense, and indoor burning on bad outdoor days.

When a DIY box makes sense

Corsi-Rosenthal style boxes (a box fan sealed to MERV-13 or similar filters) can add affordable clean-air capacity for larger spaces or temporary shelters. They are not as polished as commercial units and need safe electrical practices, but they are a legitimate tool when budgets or supply chains fail during a smog emergency.

Whether DIY or commercial, measure success by symptoms, dust settle rate, and—if you own one—a simple particle monitor trend. Gadgets are helpers; consistent use is the product.

A short buying checklist

Choose verified particle filtration suited to PM2.5, size CADR for the real room, budget filters for 12 months, confirm sleep-friendly noise, and ignore ozone-heavy gimmicks. Then commit to running the device during elevated AQI—not only when the room already smells of smoke.
